Gortnacart raised their first Active School Flag on the 9th November 2018. Donie Mc Cole helped raise the flag. Everyone enjoyed the day!
Our aim at Gortnacart N.S. is to get everyone moving more often in a fun environment. The Active School Flag initiative has been a very positive experience for all the children, parents and staff.
Our active slogans.
The children and parents came up with different slogans. We decided on a few of these to be put up around the outside of the school. Our main slogan is ‘Keep it lit, let’s get fit’

Our school walkway
Our active school walkway was erected on the school grounds. The children must all walk in the same direction while doing the walkway. The teachers created activity cards for the walkway. The children go along with their buddy while walking.
Our Active School Flag committee
Our Active School Flag committee meet up most Tuesdays to discuss ideas and activities. Children from the junior and senior room make up the Active school flag committee. Each child has a different role.
The committee have been so busy since returning back to school after the summer holidays.
Some of the other children organise and tidy up the P.E. room. and check on it daily.
The Active School Flag committee organise two containers-one for the junior yard and one for the senior yard. The committee decide on the equipment. Each lunch time on Wednesday, 2 leaders bring the equipment out to the yard.

The children were divided into 4 groups and came up with their own active songs. We even had a rap song!

Whole school community walks!
Throughout the year we organised three 5km walks with the children, staff and parents. One of the walks took place during Active School Week. These walks took place in the evenings. Our summer walk was on Narin beach.

Senior room spring clean up
Our school completed 8 weeks of swimming lessons in Ballyshannon.All classes participated. All children received certificates at the end.
A facilitator from PAWS came out to the school to emphasis the importance of water safety. The children also received certificates for this.
Big excitement today when Gerard O’Donnell came to visit our school. Gerard has just retained his title in the All Ireland 110m hurdles. He showed the children some videos and pictures of his races over the last 5 years. He brought in a selection of medals which the children really enjoyed.
Afterwards, Gerard brought the children out to the yard where they did some warm ups, threw javelins, and were put into relay teams for the hurdle races. He then showed the children a few tips for running and jumping over hurdles!
L.M. presented Gerard with a ‘Thank you’ card. The children also got the opportunity to ask lots of questions. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all! We wish him every success in the future!
Sports Day 2018
We invited a facilitator into the school for a 4 week block of Gymnastics.
Each Tuesday and Thursday a child is chosen to lead the line-up activities after lunch time.
WOW – Walk on Wednesday
Each Wednesday from September we decided to introduce a new walking initiative ‘WOW’ . We walk as a whole school on the roads nearby.
Go noodle and 10 @ 10
Throughout the day or on wet breaks we use 10@10 or Go Noodle. The children really enjoy these activities.
Active school tour
In June we went on an active school tour. We went to Extreme Adventure in Letterkenny where the children participated in lots of activities and also a mud run.
Laps to lapland
Each day the children and staff ran/walked laps of the yard wearing Christmas hats. Each lap represented 1km. We reached Lapland by the Christmas holidays.
Cumann na mBunscol
Each year the children in the senior room participate in the Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic games.
Loughros Point Rowing Club
During Active School Week, the local rowing club came into the school and brought rowing machines in for the children to try out. Since then a few children joined the club.
Irish Water Safety
We invited a PAWS facilitator into the school to emphasis the importance of water safety.
National Bike Week
As part of National Bike Week we invited a facilitator into the school to teach the children cycling skills. Some children and staff cycled to and from school on this day!
GAA 5 Star Centre
Our school has signed up for the 5 star centre and will be completing it this school year. This is a new initiative for this school year run by Croke Park.
Irish Heart Foundation
Each child received a ‘Let’s get active award’ booklet. Over the next 4 weeks the children have to complete active homework and return it to the school each Monday.
Active School Week
Our Active School Week was very enjoyable for all staff and pupils. Throughout the week the children got the opportunity to enjoy Physical activities through games and fun.
In addition to our Active School week timetable, we also did the following activities:
- 10@10 each morning.
- Tuesday & Thursday line up activities after lunch.
- Also on Wednesday equipment used by all children on the yard at lunch time.
- Thursday 5pm – 5km walk with students/parents and staff.
- Maths Trail (children went with their buddy).
